RPGs you can actually play on a commute

April 15, 2026 · Mikael Lindqvist

I love a sprawling RPG, but my longest uninterrupted play window most days is a twelve-minute tram ride. The good news is that plenty of mobile RPGs are built for exactly that.

The key feature is fast, reliable saving. A game that lets you drop out mid-battle and resume instantly is worth ten that force you to reach a save point. Turn-based combat helps here too, since nothing punishes you for pausing to think.

Auto-battle gets a bad reputation, but for grinding on a bumpy bus it's a genuine gift. The trick is games that let you intervene the moment a fight turns dangerous, so you keep control when it counts.

Emberfall Saga is my current go-to for this. Its combat queues cleanly, it saves everywhere, and I can skip animations to squeeze more turns into a short ride. That combination makes a full RPG feel commute-sized.

Look for those traits and even a big game becomes something you can chip away at fifteen minutes at a time.
